Happy Sunday! This month has been all about spring and Earth Day in my classroom. I have a few favorite books for Earth Day that I love to read, and some go-to activities that I pull out every year. We are usually not in school on Earth Day (spring break!) so I do most of my Earth Day activities the week before.

Earthdance, by Joanne Ryder is one of my favorite books for Earth Day. It's the perfect book for a read aloud and to work on visualizing. I like to read it out loud first, showing the pictures, then read it again, asking students to draw what they see. We point out the use of strong verbs, similes and figurative language. After we've read it a couple time, I put on some piano-type music and read it again - this time having students move to the words. They start small, growing with the text. We talk about how the word choice helps us to know exactly how to move. I also encourage my kiddos to draw and write about what they "see" when they hear the words and phrases.

My kiddos this year have been OBSESSED with animals of every kind. Second graders usually do like animals, but these guys have taken it to a whole new level. I knew that I needed to pull out some endangered animal texts this time around. A great one to use is Almost Gone, by Steve Jenkins (from the Let's Read and Find Out series). There is information about all kinds of endangered animals, from ones my kiddos already know, to some unusual animals they might not be familiar with.

I use this opportunity to build on their interests by doing a "walk the room" search for different animals. I have 8 different endangered animal fact pages around the room. Students need to search the room to find them, and use the text to answer the question hanging nearby. Again, some of these animals are familiar, and some are a bit different.

After our animal research has been done, we sit down and talk about what we've learned. I created a flip book for them to use to highlight interesting information abut each animal. Before completing the flip book, we work together to complete a chart synthesizing information from all the animals. I divide my kiddos into groups, making each group an "expert" about an animal from the fact cards. This way, everyone contributes.

Besides endangered animals, I also like to make sure my students understand that everyday activities are important in taking care of the earth - it's not just Earth Day for one day! We read Earth Day Every Day, by Lisa Bullard to get a brief understanding of what Earth Day is and how we can make a difference. Then we brainstorm all the ways we can think of to help the earth. I like to use Miss DeCarbo's Earth Day resource for this. It's a great way to use QR codes to find information and we use what we have learned to write about ways we can be planet protectors.

Finally, I always make sure to find out a little more about my kiddos with a "Find a Friend" activity. This is perfect for starting a lesson or a quick activity at the end of the day. Each student has a copy of the grid and walks around trying to find the names of other students who do the things listed.

You can grab a copy of the Find-a-Friend activity and the Earthdance sheet by clicking HERE (or on the images above. The endangered animals resource is in my store - click HERE to check it out.)

Earth Day is every day, and this is the perfect time to get kids interested in what they can do to help protect the earth. What are some of your favorite Earth Day activities?

Happy Sunday! Just thought I'd pop in for a minute and share what I'm up to today.  I'm linking up with Teaching Trio (who, by the way, got a whole new blog design since I lasted visited them and it's fantastic!) for The Sunday Scoop!

I am happy to say that my "have to's" are actually all done! (I may have decided to link up this week just to be able to say I accomplished something! :-) I just uploaded "Rock the Rules" to my TpT store. Ever have one of those projects that just kept getting bigger and bigger? It's over 100 pages of goodness all about getting those rules down in the first few weeks of school.  TONS of graphic organizers... enough said.  (You can click {HERE} if you want to check it out.) As for paying bills, also enough said.... but what did I ever do before online banking, I ask you?  I also reviewed a huge resource for another seller which is going to be wonderful!

My "hope to's" include a lake boat cruise.  Don't get too excited... it's a very small lake and those of us oldies like to troll along the edge of the lake in the evening... we started calling it the "dinner cruise" and it kind of stuck.  Given that it's about 100 degrees right now (finally some summer weather!), being on the water will be nice. Before that, I hope to get my "to do" list done for the week. I find that by writing down what I want to do, I get more done.  And that includes shopping trips to Target, etc.

I am very happy to be still enjoying my summer! I've said it before, but I know that many of you are already in back-to-school mode, and although my teacher brain never really shuts off, it's nice to know I don't HAVE to think about school just yet.

Be sure to head over to Teaching Trio and check out what everyone else is up to this summer Sunday. And while you're clicking around, go over and visit one of my very good friends who is celebrating her one year "blogiversary" today! Leave her some love and grab the great freebie she has to celebrate!

Are you afraid of spiders?  I really am not.  I don't particularly like them, but I don't run screaming like I do when I see, a moth, let's say.... Then again, where I live we don't have many really scary looking spiders, so that's a good thing.

We have a short week this week (two early dismissal days for parent conferences), which mean I only have 3 writing blocks.  I wanted to start some nonfiction writing, but I needed something quick and easy because I'm launching into bats next week.  I decided to combine our study of nonfiction text features in reading with our writing about spiders, to create a large hallway display showcasing what we will have learned.

(Notice this is all written in the future tense - I haven't actually done this yet, but those are the plans!)

We're going to start out with a quick review of the structure of nonfiction text writing - just the basic topic sentence, details, closing sentence.  Then it's time for some research!  I'm going to use my brand new "All About Spiders" unit as the basis for our research.  There are 6 "fact cards" filled with information on different spider topics - anatomy, babies, webs, etc.

I'll project each card on the whiteboard and we'll identify the main idea (start thinking about topic sentences!) and the details of each, writing down interesting facts for our writing later.

I also want to use this video from Mocomag Kids Magazine.

The facts are pretty much what are already in the cards, and since we'll be reading other nonfiction books about spiders, I think I'll put this up as a morning activity for students to watch as "morning work" one day.

Which reminds me, I also found this article from Scholastic News online -
http://www.scholastic.com/browse/article.jsp?id=3758083
I'm thinking it will be another morning activity - maybe read and talk with your partner about something....

Anyway (you can see how I get distracted when I'm creating.. it's a real problem sometimes...), after the research we'll use a graphic organizer to plan our writing.  Here are the organizers I'm going to use (you can click on the images to download them for yourself, if you'd like):

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2ize_mAbVGMTXkyVGRDMXdfYk0/view?usp=sharing
Then we'll write our paragraphs - but here's where the fun comes in!  I'm dividing the class into groups and giving each group a topic to focus on for their writing.  (I'll base this on information I get from their work on the graphic organizers.)  Then each group will use the details they came up with to write a group paragraph - along with one or two examples of text features that fits with their topic (ex. bold print, map, diagram, fact box, etc.)  When we put everything together, we'll add a table of contents, glossary, index and headings to the board.

Woo-hoo! I'm getting excited just writing about this!  We'll end up integrating this into our reading block and writing blocks this week, so we'll have plenty of time.  I'll be sure to show you the finished display at the end of the week.

In the meantime, if you're looking for some spider fun for your kiddos, check out my "All About Spiders" mini-unit.  Not only does it have the fact cards, but there are 3 sorts (main idea/detail, fact and opinion and true/false), a fun "walk the room" activity to go with the fact cards and more graphic organizers and writing pages.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Spiders-a-nonfiction-mini-unit-1507040

I also included a fun and easy craft to showcase all those spider facts your kiddos learn.  I've done this in past years and it always turns out great!

You can check out my spiders unit by clicking the images above, or by clicking HERE.

And just because I'm so excited about my plans this week, I'll give away a spider unit to one lucky person who comments below with an interesting spider fact or great spider book (Don't forget to leave me your email!).  I'll choose a winner on Friday.  Good luck!

Hello Monday!  I spent a little time this week thinking about my plans and ideas for the coming year.  I LOVE integrating science into my day in any way I can.  I'm the one who has dead bugs, a giant wasps's nest and a preserved baby shark (yes, you read that right!) in their room.  I'm the one who takes the kids into the hallway so they can see the huge praying mantis on the window... the one who adds some science fun to Halloween (check this out!)... I'm the one who volunteers to team up to teach science/social studies to all the second grade classes - I'll do the science!

And with the NGSS being implemented in my building (and ME being the one who is responsible for teaching my students those science concepts!), I'm looking for as many ways as possible to integrate science into my day.  I have planned in to my year when I'll do full science units, and I will add science to my writing time, as well.  But I always like to throw some science in to anything I can.

So today I'm linking up with 4th Grade Frolics for Monday Made It.

We always start the year with an introduction to being a scientist.  We talk about what a scientist does, the tools they use, etc. and we do some easy center activities to practice careful observations - the heart of being a scientist.  The favorite center, without a doubt, is the one with the wave bottles.

Here's a finished bottle.
wave bottle

You've probably seen them before, they're nothing new.  But they ARE fascinating to second graders.  Here's a quick how-to.

You need a clear plastic bottle - any size is fine.  I use a 2 liter bottle.  A bottle of baby oil (you can use any oil as long as it is clear) and blue food coloring.
wave bottle

Fill the bottle halfway with water and add food coloring.  Shake it so the food coloring dissolves all the way.  Then, fill the bottle the rest of the way with the baby oil.
wave bottle

That's it!  The oil sits on top of the water so it makes "waves" when the bottle is moved.  Shake it and see what happens.  Roll it across the floor. (I wrap tape around the bottle cap to make sure it stays closed.)

You can take this activity a step or to farther by trying different liquids - corn syrup, vegetable oil, etc.
Or, add some fizz!

I created a quick little freebie for you to use with your kiddos.  The cards are great for a center and you can use the recording sheet if you want.  Just click on the image to download the sheets.

If you're looking for more on being a scientist, check out my new "Being a Scientist" unit.  I use these activities at the start of every year to kick-off our adventures in science.

My plan is to share more simple science ideas with you throughout the year.  Sometimes it's easier to plan a full unit than it is to sneak in small ideas.  Share your simple science ideas with me!

Woo-hoo!  It looks like we'll FINALLY be having a full week of school this week.  I'm tired already!  I just wanted to drop in and make sure you all know about the fantastic sale Teachers Pay Teachers is having at the end of this week!
http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Second-Grade-Stories
(button shared by Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah Designs)

Now I have to tell you, when I first heard about this sale, my initial thought was -- oh wow!  they're having a sale to celebrate my one year TpT anniversary!  That's right, this Friday will mark one year for me on TpT.  Now, my sales are nowhere near 3 million strong... but I'm loving the fact that everyone will be celebrating along with me.  Everything in my store, along with so many other great shops, will be on sale for 20% off this Thursday and Friday.  That means 20% off to start, and then, if you remember to enter the promo code TPT3 (and I admit, I sometimes forget to do it!), you get another 10% off - that works out to 28% off.  My wishlist is getting really long, so I'm excited to do some shopping!

If you're looking for an easy way to find other great stores joining the sale, I've got you covered.  I'm linking up with Pinkadots Elementary to add my store to an ever-growing list of great places to shop for the sale.

Now, I'm not a huge fan of promoting my products on my blog, so I'm giving you a product alert - you can stop reading now and join me shopping later this week, or you can read on for a peek at a few of my updated SPRING resources!  I am sooooo ready for spring - any sign of it would be welcome.  I was talking with my kiddos today about how we'd know when spring came, and one of them said, "One sign of spring will be when Ms. G. doesn't put on her long sweater because she's cold!"  Ok, I guess I have been putting that thing on in the classroom just about every day for weeks.... Here are a few signs of spring you can check out in my TpT store:
